Located in the charming neighborhood of San Francisco’s Richmond District, The Richmond offers an intimate and refined New American dining experience that beautifully balances classic American flavors with innovative culinary techniques. Nestled at 615 Balboa Street, this cozy yet sophisticated spot doubles as a boutique hotel, but its true heart lies in its exceptional kitchen, where carefully curated menus take center stage.
The Richmond’s culinary offerings center around thoughtfully crafted tasting menus that invite diners on a journey of layers, textures, and nuanced flavors. The Prime Rib Dinner Special showcases a masterful blend of rich, dry-aged prime rib paired with indulgent sides like Italian sausage & mushroom en croute accompanied by a luscious cheese fondue and comforting mashed potatoes enriched by a cream of chard. The accompanying salads—such as the fresh asparagus Caesar with prosciutto croutons—add a crisp and savory balance, rounding out this hearty yet elegant meal. For $60 per person, this special is a decadent celebration of flavors that appeal to both traditionalists and adventurous palates.
The real star, however, is the Five Course Tasting Menu where each plate reads like a love letter to seasonal ingredients and impeccable technique. Imagine beginning your evening with delicate shrimp fritters and a fragrant shrimp bisque, paired harmoniously with a crisp 2014 Jean Loron Beaujolais that brightens every bite. The seared foie gras served as pain perdu with roasted apples and a drizzle of agave syrup offers a perfect harmony of richness and subtle sweetness, followed seamlessly by a baby back rib roti with velvety baked bean puree and refreshing coleslaw. The menu culminates in an oxtail, mushroom duxelles, and ricotta raviolo bathed in a silky mushroom cream sauce—each course thoughtfully paired with exquisite wines, creating a symphony of tastes expertly designed by the chef.
The Richmond also offers a flexible Three Course Tasting Menu where guests select an appetizer, entrée, and dessert, ensuring a personalized dining adventure. This option encourages shared enjoyment among the table, fostering connection and conversation in a warm setting.
What truly elevates the experience at The Richmond is the inviting atmosphere combined with heartfelt hospitality. One guest, John Z, celebrated a birthday here and noted the attentive service that began with a thoughtful reservation confirmation and progressed through a meal accompanied by sparkling wines and white wine pairings enhancing every dish. Others like Brianna Cook were won over by dishes they never expected to enjoy—such as the squash soup—and relished the generous wine pairings that complemented the food beautifully. Pasha Gleyzer echoed the sentiment of being welcomed like old friends, savoring dishes like the butternut squash soup and fresh halibut in an atmosphere that felt both exclusive and comfortable.
Ken McGuire’s anniversary dinner experience encapsulates what many visitors feel at The Richmond: a perfect blend of delicious food, inviting ambiance, attentive service, and little extras that make the evening truly special—like unexpected additional courses or a cozy private booth. It is a rare place where you can feel completely at home while enjoying a culinary journey worth savoring slowly.

Definitely 5 stars. We came to this place to celebrate my birthday. We made reservation one month earlier. Got a text message in the afternoon to confirm the reservation. The dinner started from salad and bread. They are not in the tasting menu, but included. They were paired with sparkling wine. Next one is the soup. It was paired with white wine. I liked the puff pastry very much. Then the fish cake came with another white wine. This is the best dish of the whole dinner. The scallop is tender and fish cake itself is delicious. Duck dumpling and tender breast is paired with red wine. The dumpling was crispy and breast was tender. Main dish was roasted pork. It was a big pork with mushrooms and green beans. Mushrooms were so delicious. I personally didn’t really like the pork itself since I am the lamb lover. Of course it was paired with another red wine. Dessert was coffee ice cream paired with dessert wine. Since it is my birthday, I also got a special treat: a piece of cheesecake. Thanks chef John for the kindness. I am the cheesecake lover and really like it. Overall experience is super. We got a very private table and excellent service from Jeffrey. It was a very special birthday dinner!
What a wonderful experience from start to finish. The chef is humble and genuinely grateful for each guest, and both he and his wife were an absolute delight. And the food—wow! Every dish felt like an experience on its own. The courses were perfectly portioned, beautifully prepared, and absolutely delicious. While it’s a five-course meal, he surprised us with a couple of extra treats , which made the evening even more special. We lingered over wine, savored each bite, and never felt rushed. This is truly a hidden gem in San Francisco, and we’ll not only be back but will be recommending it to everyone we know.
Not sure which was better—the food or the service. We loved everything on tasting menu and incredibly generous wine pairings. The surprise winner to me was the squash soup, which is a dish I would’ve sworn I hated before dining here. Everything was delicious—crab cake, ravioli, duck, the fish… Just perfect. The chef/owner is the kindest, most down-to-earth man. He was incredibly patient while explaining the wines to us, and he happily struck up conversation with us about the little treasures in the neighborhood. We can’t wait to return and try the menu during every season!
What a great place, and why I have discovered it only now. John is the most gracious host who made us feel extremely welcome and comfortable. The whole place is very cozy. It's like a private dining. We were able to enjoy our food and talk as if we were the only people in the restaurant. The food was also great. I don't really like butternut squash soup, but I loved John's. Halibut was very delicious that melted in your mouth. The other dishes were also great and wonderfully presented. Even the dinner rolls which they bake in the house, were also delicious. I actually begged John, and he gave me some to take home. I think the local patrons should chip in and buy this place a great espresso machine :). That was the only thing missing for me in this dinner.
We went here for a belated anniversary dinner tonight and absolutely loved it. The food was DELICIOUS, the atmosphere was great (if you like classic rock and/or 90s music, you'll also love the music selection), and the couple that run the show/served us were attentive and hooked us up with extra courses and drinks. We had a private little booth, and it was wonderful. We both felt at home and I'm looking forward to going back (probably for my wife's birthday, nobody tell her). If you haven't checked this place out yet, DO IT!
The concept here is that the chef, John, and one waitress prepare all the food and service the tables in an intimate small space. The tasting menu is the only option! Every table has its own pocket, surrounded by curtains, to create a cozy private pocket. I loved the food, especially the ribeye. Two bonus courses. They easily accommodated a shellfish allergy, changing up one of the courses. Everything tasted fresh and was played beautifully. We also had good wine that was reasonably priced. Fantastic dining experience overall.
Absolute perfection! My husband and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary at The Richmond, and had a perfect night! We did the tasting with the wine pairings, and couldn't have asked for a better night. The food was tasty and the recommended wine pairings went along perfectly with the food.
Went to The Richmond for a birthday dinner and couldn’t have loved it more. It’s a set menu with an optional wine add-on so you don’t have to think about anything. Sit back, relax and enjoy good food and great company. It’s truly a hidden gem in the Inner Richmond. Already thinking about an excuse to go back.
